Tomatoes - Best Time to Plant Around Australia

|Michael Lane

In most parts of Australia, spring is the ideal time to plant tomatoes – once the risk of frost has passed and the soil begins to warm. Depending on your climate, this can be from late August to October. If you're in a warmer region, you might even be able to get a head start indoors or in a small greenhouse setup.

Climate Tips for Tomato Planting in Australia

Australia's different climate zones affect when and how you should plant your tomatoes:

  • Tropical (e.g. Darwin, far north QLD): Plant in the dry season (April to July) to avoid wet-season humidity, which can lead to disease.

  • Subtropical (e.g. Brisbane, coastal NSW): Plant from August to October. Choose disease-resistant varieties if humidity is high.

  • Temperate (e.g. Sydney, Perth, Adelaide): Plant from September to November. Tomatoes love the spring sunshine here.

  • Cool (e.g. Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart): Wait until October or even November, once the frosts are gone. You can start seeds indoors earlier if needed.

In all regions, make sure your VERTI-POTS™ are positioned for maximum sun exposure and protected from strong wind.

Seeds or Seedlings?

Both are great options with VERTI-POTS™. Seedlings give you a head start and are often easier for beginners, while seeds give you more variety and control.

Success rate from seedlings is high, especially when combined with good soil, sun and a consistent watering schedule. If growing from seed, expect germination in 7–14 days with fruit starting around 10–12 weeks.

How Much Sun and Care Do Tomatoes Need?

Tomatoes are sun-lovers. They need at least 6 hours of direct sun per day – ideally more. Place your VERTI-POTS™ in a sunny spot, and turn the tower occasionally to make sure all sides get equal exposure.

Water regularly but don’t overdo it. The VERTI-POTS™ internal irrigation makes this easier by distributing moisture more evenly through each layer. You’ll also want to feed your plants with a balanced fertiliser every few weeks.

How Long from Plant to Pick?

Most tomato varieties will be ready to harvest around 10 to 14 weeks from planting. Cherry and grape varieties tend to fruit sooner, making them perfect for beginners or those keen to see results quickly.

Tips for Success

  • Choose the right variety: Cherry and dwarf varieties grow best in vertical setups.

  • Prune wisely: Remove the lower leaves and any small “sucker” branches to encourage airflow and better fruiting.

  • Support your plants: Use ties or clips to help keep your vines upright.
